The Platten name is of German origin and means flat. The first Plattens
came from Germany. Meahsrsdorf and Westphalia are two areas in Germany
which had Plattens living there in the 16th and 17th centuries. There
are still Plattens living in these areas today. The source I have spoke
to (Andrew Platten of Lanchashire,England) informs me that the early Plattens
were Herring fishermen and in the winter probably weavers. The earliest
Plattens I could find on record were Agnes Platten married in 1555 of
Devon, Agnete Platten married in 1585 of Norfolk and Pribbert Achotes
Platten married 1660 of Sweden. These were all found at www.familysearch.org.

Coming from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, I am directly related to the Yorkshire
clan of Plattens. The east coast towns of Yorkshire were where the Platten
family is believed to have landed in England. Many Plattens still live
in those towns. My family tree is directly linked to Plattens in Yorkshire
but if you have any further information about my family tree and you could
possibly fill in a few gaps I have then please e-mail me at rplatten@hotmail.com.
